Why PostgreSQL 19 Broke Its 10-Year Autumn Release Streak — LLM Bug Discovery, a 74.6% Back-Patch Surge, and 31 Committers at Capacity

After ten consecutive major releases landed like clockwork between mid-September and mid-October, PostgreSQL 19 pushed its planned GA date to November 19, 2026, adding an unusual Beta 4 and RC 2 while reverting 8 to 10 major features late in testing. The bottleneck is not sloppy AI-written code, but an unprecedented wave of verified LLM-discovered vulnerabilities—44 CVEs across three quarterly updates and a 74.6% single-year surge in cross-release back-patches. With only 31 active committers worldwide reviewing fixes across five supported branches, PostgreSQL has become the first flagship open-source infrastructure project to hit the human verification ceiling in the AI auditing era.
